Franchising: The Challenges Ahead

By Alexander Lamnidis, President, The Franchising Association of Greece

As vast changes occur on the economic and political front, new business tools that once seemed excellent soon become worthless or even extinct.

Franchising, a relatively new tool of doing business in Greece, has been helped enormously from the economic environment of the late 1990s. Today, the 60 members of the Greek Franchise Association have a collective sales turnover of USD 1.2 billion and employ more than 15,000 people. Nevertheless, franchising companies face challenges and growing competition—from other franchising companies and from new market entrants. In fact, many companies are adopting new ways of organisation similar to franchising.

The Franchising Concept

On the basis of contractual relationships, franchising means close co-operation between a franchisor and several franchisees to attain a common goal of profitable business expansion. Efficient allocation of tasks and a procedural organisation are the basis for success.

Franchising has been an unbeatable business formula but franchising systems will need plenty of adaptability skills to survive.

Network organisations and franchises will play a major role in future organisational formations. Networks grow in existing and emerging lines of business, and are expected to have a major impact on existing franchise systems. Chain building continues to be a key issue because an ever-growing number of companies are becoming part of one or more chains. As this trend continues, it will be more difficult for the real independent entrepreneur or small franchise systems to survive.

This places an additional burden on the franchising community: to organise business in a way so that individuals become more entrepreneurial.

Presently, chain building is based primarily on marketing and related economies of scale, but chain building in the future will be based on minimisation of transaction costs and developments in information and communication technology and logistics.

Soon, increasing competition will force networks to focus more on the minimisation of logistics costs, forging new relationships in the franchise industry on its road to greater efficiency and higher effectiveness. Up to now, the main forces behind the success of franchising have been organisational effectiveness and cost advantage on commercial, financial and management fields. Now, these parameters need to be re-examined under a new perspective to continue on the road to effectiveness.

Chain management will lead to the redesign (of functions) in the distribution chain of goods and services by eliminating all links that do not have a definite added value. In simple terms, this means that in Europe, and in Greece in particular, several franchise systems will run the risk of becoming extinct.

I am confident that a franchise company sufficiently armed with capital and know-how to tackle these challenges will have a definite advantage over a centralised structure. Why? Because tightly centralised organisations are expensive to run due to the high degree of bureaucracy and the low motivation of individuals. Franchise organisations, on the other hand, are lower-cost organisations that run on mutually converging interests and the survival instinct of entrepreneurial spirit.

The Role of Technology

Technology is also changing business models, in and outside of the franchising world. Information and communication technologies make markets more transparent and enable consumers to make better-informed decisions. [full story...] [premium content]

Franchising Association of Greece

Franchise Association of Greece
[premium content]

The Franchise Association of Greece was the result of an effort which began in 1996 through the initiative of some people who, having foreseen the possibility of development of franchising, realised there was a need for a body that would both express common views and could be used as the driving force for further development of franchising in Greece. Renewable energy sector in Greece: a wind(ow) of opportunity

Attractive wind energy investment opportunities in Greece

"We, at the Ministry, strongly believe that the time has come for Greece to realise its full potential and become the new developing European wind energy market." --
George Salagoudis, Deputy Minister, Hellenic Republic Ministry of Development

The European Union has set a target according to which 22.1% of total electric power consumption must come from renewable energy sources by the year 2010.

In view of this window of opportunity, a dynamic wind energy company based in the south of Evia is currently developing a number of wind energy projects with excellent specifications. It is interested in co-operating with Greek and international investors interested in investing in wind energy projects in this country. These companies need to have the necessary financial strength.

If you wish to work with a local partner in order to develop and construct wind farms in the country, please read the following:

The company is interested in attracting investors. It also wishes to communicate with multinational wind-turbine manufacturers.

If you are a serious investor and would like to invest in wind energy in Greece, this is the right company you should be co-operating with!

This Greek firm is able to  assist you all the way -- from A to Z -- and is also eager to discuss any of your proposals for the Greek wind energy market. This dynamic company is managed by competent professionals with extensive experience.

The company has excellent wind sites with an average wind speed of 8m/s and with a good capacity of at least 40 MW installed power. For this reason, it is interested in attracting investors and seeking strategic partners from Greece and/or overseas in view of developing attractive and profitable wind energy projects in Greece.

Project portfolio (MW):
Designed capacity: 43.2 MW (1 x 17 MW, 1 x 8.4 MW, 1 x 10.2 MW and 1 x 7.4 MW).

Total budget:
EUR 47 million (perhaps less -- EUR 45 million -- depending on what equipment will be purchased). Please note that is a unique four-in-one project built around a sub-station and that potential investors may invest in one separate project or all of them together.

Status of each project (licensing process):
This project has acquired all the necessary state permits; the only permit still required is the generation permit (before the installation permit); in other words, we are talking about a project which is in an advanced stage (high maturity level) since all that is required right now is a strong, reliable financial investor.

Funding and financing needs (project budget and equity part):
Minimum 30% equity capital, otherwise one will not receive a license to operate/generate in Greece.

Applications / readiness of the project:
The applications for this project are READY to be applied for, which means that any potential investor should realise that if the necessary funds to be invested are deposited tomorrow morning, for example, the project can go ahead immediately.

If you are interested in this investment opportunity, please send us:

A) Your company profile.
B) Your financial ability and/or investment criteria.
C) Your project portfolio and expectations for Greece (MW expectations).
D) Your experience in the wind-energy or RES sector.

About the company:
Since the company is experienced in this sector in Greece, there is frankly nothing that the firm cannot do in this country concerning wind-energy development. The company is offering the following services to wind-energy developers:

  • Various secured and measured wind farm sites on the best wind energy locations

  • Excellent contacts within the Greek state and government

  • Applications for all necessary approvals in order to build wind farms (grid connection, planning permission, etc.)

  • Conclusion of all other required legal agreements

  • Conclusion of long-term PPA (20 years) with government-owned utility

  • Construction management until completion of the specific wind farm

  • Technical operation and maintenance of wind farms

In addition, the company's services include handling all administrative and construction procedures as well as all other aspects leading to the implementation of wind power parks. In addition, the firm is active in selling and promoting wind turbines.

Please note that other wind-energy sites have been found in various areas throughout Greece that can be used for immediate development. The company has evaluated large sites with -- most of the time -- good access and grid connection capability and with very good measured average wind speeds. The firm has already secured the use of land for implementing wind energy projects. It offers prospective investors very prosperous terms.

Further information:
If you are interested in this or other wind energy investment opportunities in Greece or your company would like to co-operate with a reliable Greek partner, please contact us.

Wind energy in Greece

Wind energy

Wind is one of the cheapest, cleanest and safest forms of energy. It does not pollute the atmosphere. Greece was among the first countries to use wind power back in the late 1970s and 1980s, but there are two main reasons it subsequently fell behind.

There are financial incentives within the European Union's Third Community Support Framework for investors. Any company, including Public Power Corp. SA (PPC), can get grants of at least 30% to install renewable energy plants.

At the end of 2002, Greece had just 276 megawatts installed, compared to Germany's staggering lead of 12,001 megawatts and peers Italy and Spain with 785 megawatts and 4,830 megawatts respectively. [more...] [premium content]

Greek renewable energy market attracted investments of EUR 85 million in 2004

March 23, 2005 -- Three foreign energy companies -- Iberdrola (Spain), EdF New Energies (France) and CESA Eolica Corporation (Spain) -- announced their entry into the Greek Renewable Energy Sources' market over the last 12 months, committing 85 million euros in foreign direct investments in the country, George Salagoudis, Greek Deputy Minister of Development, said on March 22.

Speaking to reporters, to present a review of the ministry's actions during his first year in office, Salagoudis said that in December 2004, Greece ranked sixth in a world list of countries attractive for investments on windpower parks, and eighth on the world composite index for Renewable Energy Sources, according to a list by Ernst & Young.

The Deputy Minister of Development said that the ministry significantly accelerated licensing procedures for building Renewable Energy stations in Greece, with issued licences totalling 24.71% of total licenses issued since 1994 in the country.

"These facts show that something is changing. The international investment community is looking at Greece with confidence once again. It is our responsibility to continue this trend," Salagoudis said.
