About INVgr - The Business & Investment World of Greece

Launched in December 1998, INVgr is the leading on-line source for timely information and authoritative, English-language business intelligence on investing in and doing business with Greece.

Greek newspapers have voted INVgr the number-one authority in English on investment and business in Greece. Furthermore, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the business information arm of The Economist Group and world leader in country intelligence, lists INVgr among the popular sites for information on investing in Greece.

INVgr's objectives:

  • To provide comprehensive, authoritative, on-line, English-language intelligence on the business and investment world of Greece to investors, business people and other stakeholders from around the world on a subscription basis.

  • To connect business people in Greece with international investors, partners and other interested parties from overseas.

  • To promote Greece as an attractive place to do business and invest.

  • To promote and introduce Greek products, services and business interests to INVgr's registered subscribers.

  • To be an authoritative Internet vortal that pro-actively contributes to promoting Greece's increasing international presence and corporate activities outside of its domestic market, especially in countries and regions such as China, South-East Europe, Turkey and elsewhere.

  • To encourage entrepreneurs, SMEs and multinationals in Greece to invest in the country's human capital, technology, natural heritage (environmental technologies, energy and water conservation), renewable energy sources (RES), organic farming and the community.

  • And last, but not least, to publish an up-to-date, comprehensive list of attractive business, investment, franchising, real estate and tourism infrastructure expansion opportunities in Greece for INVgr's registered subscribers.

Access to INVgr's premium content is restricted to registered subscribers. INVgr offers two subscription options:

Most of the business intelligence, reports, PDF documents and other premium content that INVgr's subscribers are able to read or download are provided by respected companies, organisations and professionals based in Greece and abroad. Some of INVgr's most popular special sections include:

  • South-East Europe:
Since 1998, INVgr has been publishing business intelligence on the development, business activities, investments and corporate expansion plans of Greek companies, investors and entrepreneurs active in South-East Europe. This English-language intelligence is only available to INVgr's subscribers. A few excerpts of the information on file can be found in this page [click here], which is freely accessible to the general public. This special section of INVgr also focuses on Greece's trade relations with countries in the South-East Europe region and beyond and includes several constantly-growing launch pads with hyperlinks to useful English-language corporate, governmental and non-governmental Web sites, portals and vortals in this dynamic region that will give you a head start when investing in or doing business in/with this rapidly-expanding, dynamic region of Europe. Greece is the only nation in South-East Europe that is part of the euro-zone. Partly due to its strategic location and the fact that it is currently the only EU-member country in the Balkans, Greece has become the springboard for investing and doing business in South-East Europe.

  • Greece-Turkey:
At the end of January 2002, INVgr introduced a new section, with the aim of promoting and strengthening the bilateral business, trade, tourism and investment relations between Greece and Turkey.

  • Greece-China:
This special section of INVgr focuses on the business, trade and investment relations between Greece and the People's Republic of China. It also focuses on the activities, investments and corporate expansion plans of Greek companies, investors and entrepreneurs active in China.

  • Career opportunities:
    In this popular section, INVgr:

    • Lists current employment opportunities in Greece.

    • Lists selected job vacancies that are advertised by Greek multinationals or international organisations requiring qualified staff for their overseas operations outside of Greece (e.g. South-East Europe, Middle East).

    • Profiles leading local and multinational employers in Greece.

    • Profiles local and international executive search firms in Greece and Cyprus.

  • Business, investment, real-estate, partnership, franchising, post-Olympic and other opportunities in Greece:
Do you have a business or investment opportunity and are seeking for the right investors or partners? Alternatively, are you looking for business, investment, real estate, partnership or franchising opportunities in Greece and/or the wider region of South-East Europe? If so, look no further! Click here.

  • Athens Olympics:
This comprehensive section of INVgr contains links, business intelligence, company profiles, key contacts, interviews, investment opportunities and information on tenders related to the 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games and post-Olympic Athens infrastructure projects.

INVgr is owned and daily updated by INV International Ltd. of the United Kingdom.

Forthcoming Business Files 2007

The Business File Special Survey Series is taking a new tack in 2007. Instead of the wide-ranging sectoral surveys of recent years, we are trying to narrow the focus. Thus Special Survey No. 63 appearing this March, instead of being on the Greek banking sector, deals with Greek regional banking in the Balkans and environs. The idea is to examine in greater detail an aspect of the sector rather providing a general overview of the whole.
Special Survey 64 appearing in June 2007, instead of surveying financial services, will focus on venture capital. In today's globalised market place, traditional Greek industries such as textiles and clothing face intense competition from low wage countries. An effort is being made to develop specialities in high technology and differentiated high-value added products. Such businesses present the prospect of high returns if successful but also have great potential for failure. Banks are often unwilling to take that risk. This is where the venture capitalist comes in to make relatively small, short-term investments that will get such ventures up and running. For assuming such risk, the venture capitalist expects high returns and an agreed early exit strategy. Venture capital is still in its infancy in Greece but it is growing. The players are as yet small but have formed themselves into the Hellenic Venture Capital Association and are expanding both their networks and deal flows. Special survey 64 will look at the financiers, the companies in which they are investing and how this vital sector impacts on the promotion of investments for growth.

Special Survey 65 appearing in October 2007, instead of canvassing the construction sector as a whole, will deal with property development. It will look at the packagers who put together the parcels of land on which contractors construct malls or housing estates or leisure integrated units. It will examine the new banking institutions that are growing up to finance these deals and the listed real estate investments trusts (REITs) in which the developments are then incorporated for further trading based on the success of the revenue streams they generate. It's a phenomenon that is less than a decade old in Greece but growing fast and one which carries great potential for new specialisations in real estate packaging, funding, integrated design and subsequent management.

Special Survey 66 will be our regular Annual Review of the political and economic year. The 2007 review will be particularly timely as it will follow shortly after, or immediately predate, national elections. After three years of being under the EU's excessive deficit procedure, the economy should finally be operating independently of Brussels' strictures. Eurostat should have accepted or rejected the new GDP figures by then. The rush is on to absorb funds that must be spent by the end of 2008 under the third Community Support Framework (2000-2006) while more details should be known about the fourth, the National Strategic Reference Framework (2007 - 2013). There will be an assessment of the constitutional amendment process and the success or failure of the education reform debate - although by the time we appear, the electorate may have decided that for us.

Robert McDonald

Business File is a quarterly, English-language publication each issue of which analyses a different aspect of Greek industry or business. They are independent, editorial surveys of some 30,000 words, researched and prepared by Mr. Robert McDonald, a London-based freelance writer and broadcaster with more than 35 years' experience of Greek public affairs. He is the contributor to the Economist Intelligence Unit's quarterly Country Report: Greece and annual Country Commerce: Greece. He is also the author of the quarterly industrial survey series Business File published in Athens by Kerkyra Publications Ltd.

The exhaustively researched Business File reports examine the legislative context, the current issues, the major players and their policies. The emphasis is on hard fact but there is also interpretation and analyses. Subjects to date have included energy, capital markets, shipping, food, telecommunications and many others. Each survey is published in Greek in the relevant issue of Oikonomiki Viomichaniki Epitheorisi.

Examples of summaries of these unique quarterly Business File Special Surveys that were published in 2004 and 2005 can be found by clicking here:

INV International supports Olympic Truce

INV International Ltd. fully supports the international Olympic Truce initiative. The idea of the Olympic Truce -- also known as 'Ekechereia' -- dates back to an ancient Hellenic tradition. In keeping with this tradition all hostilities would cease during the Olympic Games. The Olympic Truce was fully respected for twelve centuries of Olympic Games in antiquity.

With the view to promoting, at all times, the institution of the Olympic Truce at selected events during the Greek EU Presidency 2003 with multinational participation, information will be available on this international peace initiative, as well as the possibility of holding special Truce signing ceremonies by leader and personalities wishing to contribute to the spread of this institution. INV International supports the campaign to return the Parthenon Marbles to Athens

INV International Ltd. fully supports the global campaign to return the Parthenon Marbles to Athens by running banners on INVgr and INVbg that are hyperlinked to the Parthenon 2004 Campaign Web site and by providing INVgr's/INVbg's subscribers and Web site visitors with comprehensive information, useful links and interesting quotes on this issue of major national and international importance.

The Parthenon Marbles - Missing since 1801

"... We see ancient cultural chains broken, past traditions crumble and wonderful special characteristics wither away. Our common memory is threatened, our soul shrivels, our creativity is stifled, our present becomes rootless. 'He who has nothing old has nothing new', says an Arab proverb. This past must emerge from the museums in order to become a source of inspiration and creativity, to become the instrument and the joy of the people..."
The late Melina Mercouri (1923-1994), Mexico City, July 29,1982 [full speech]
(World Conference on Cultural Policies, organised by UNESCO.)
